Viral marketing is so simple and can seriously boost your sales, profits and profile. Yet it's so misunderstood that very few business owners know how to harness it's power. And here's what most business owners don't realise about viral marketing...
With a few adjustments in what marketing you're doing in your business right now, you can begin to develop a viral marketing strategy. Even if you only do business locally or regionally, there's still many viral marketing tools that can make a dramatic difference to your business. Even more surprising to some people is that you don't even need a website of your own to get started with viral marketing. All you need is a story to tell or something worth sharing (you can even latch onto someone else's story if you want).
Let me explain. Imagine going to the movies and seeing a really exciting film. Chances are, you'd tell a couple of people about how exciting it was - that's viral marketing. You're spreading the word for someone else's business. But let's have a look at a few examples of where viral marketing (word-of-mouth promotion) has worked on a global scale: Hotmail, Harry Potter books, iPod, Body Shop, Tamagochi, Avon Cosmetics, Nokia phones, eBay, Vistaprint, Skype, communism. I'm sure you'll agree that not all of them are 'online only' businesses. So what does viral marketing mean to you and how can you use viral techniques in your business? Well, the concepts of viral marketing are available to everyone. But most people look at companies like Hotmail.com and only wish they knew how to emulate some of Hotmail's incredible success. However, there's quite a few techniques open to you, whatever industry you're in. If you're a house painter you could (and probably should) have the fact that you're a painter written in big letters (along with your contact details) on the sides and back of your van and on your overalls or uniform. You should also make sure your customers have your business cards so they can give them away to impressed friends. If you're an accountant you could have some cards printed with general tax-saving tips on them and encourage colleagues and friends to give them away. Personally I use tip-sheets that I email to new contacts and always encourage them to pass the sheet on to as many colleagues and friends as possible. I also give out photocopied info sheets when I'm speaking at events. Both of these approaches have brought customers into my business, many of whom were not the people who originally picked up the message. There's many ways to get your viral marketing message out there.
